The 2025 Frontier Forum on Information and Life Sciences of National Science Review was Successfully Held at Lanzhou University

From August 11 to 13, 2025, the 2025 Frontier Forum on Information and Life Sciences of National Science Review (NSR) was held at Lanzhou University. Co-hosted by Science China Press and Lanzhou University, this forum focused on the theme of “AI Life Sciences” (Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences). It aimed to provide a high-quality interdisciplinary exchange platform for researchers in information science and life sciences. Attending the forum were experts and scholars from universities, research institutes and related industries across the country, including Ximeng Chen, Vice President of Lanzhou University; Muming Pu, Executive Editor-in-Chief of National Science Review and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Lei Guo, Associate Editor-in-Chief of National Science Review and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Chung-I Wu, Associate Editor-in-Chief of National Science Review and Academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, China; Shengli Ren, Academic Director of Science China Press; and Guilin Wang, Director of the Editorial Office of National Science Review. The opening ceremony of the forum was hosted by Bin Hu, Member of the Editorial Board of National Science Review and Professor of the School of Information Science and Engineering of Lanzhou University, while the closing ceremony was presided over by Jianming Deng, Vice Dean of the College of Ecology of Lanzhou University.

Also in attendance at the forum were Wenbo Chen, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Information Science and Engineering of Lanzhou University; Xiaoping Duan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; Zhicheng Wang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Ecology of Lanzhou University; Jianquan Liu, Dean; Zhixin Ma, Shi Yan, Qinglin Zhao and Yanmei Han, Vice Deans of the School of Information Science and Engineering; Gang Yu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; Jianming Deng, Zhanhuan Shang and Xiangwen Fang, Vice Deans of the College of Ecology; Bin Li, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, as well as faculty members and students from both schools.

Professor Ximeng Chen, Vice President of Lanzhou University, delivered an opening speech, extending sincere welcome to the attending experts and scholars and wishing the forum a complete success. Subsequently, Academician Lei Guo, Associate Editor-in-Chief of National Science Review (NSR), noted in his speech that artificial intelligence empowering life sciences has emerged as a crucial engine for spearheading future technological development, addressing major scientific challenges and improving human quality of life. He emphasized that this forum, focusing on this cutting-edge interdisciplinary field, bears profound significance. Mr. Guilin Wang, Director of the Editorial Office, provided a systematic review of the development journey of National Science Review since its founding, elaborating on the journal’s editorial philosophy and future development blueprint. He stressed that as an outstanding representative of China’s scientific and technological journals, National Science Review has always adhered to high standards of academic quality, covering a wide range of disciplines with diverse column settings and steadily rising international influence. Going forward, it will continue to strive toward the goal of building a world-class comprehensive academic journal.

Centering on the cutting-edge developments in the interdisciplinary field of information science and life sciences, this forum featured 23 high-caliber academic presentations, systematically reviewing the research status and development trends in relevant domains, and offering new ideas and constructive suggestions for interdisciplinary innovation. The forum specially invited two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Muming Pu and Academician Hairong Zheng, to deliver keynote speeches titled Brain Science and Brain-inspired Artificial Intelligence, and Brain-Computer Interface and Biological Intelligence respectively. The two academicians shared their latest research findings and academic insights in depth, and engaged in lively academic discussions with scholars present at the venue. In addition, experts and scholars from 21 prestigious universities and research institutions, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University, delivered remarkable speeches in succession. They were: Professor Xuegong Zhang (Tsinghua University), Professor Tian Xu (Westlake University), Professor Luonan Chen (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Professor Jiang Zhang (Beijing Normal University), Professor Jian Yang (Westlake University), Researcher Guodong Wang (Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Ji Hu (ShanghaiTech University), Professor Han Zhang (Shenzhen University), Researcher Yong Wang (Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Xiaowo Wang (Tsinghua University), Professor Ge Gao(Peking University), Researcher Jun Xu (Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Shuhui Bian (Nanjing Medical University), Professor Guojie Zhang (Zhejiang University), Professor Yuedong Yang (Sun Yat-sen University), Professor Luhua Lai (Peking University), Professor Xiang Yu (Peking University), Professor Xingming Zhao (Fudan University), Researcher Shihua Zhang (Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Shuhua Xu (Fudan University), and Researcher Liping Wang (Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences). With profound academic accomplishments, innovative research perspectives and vivid academic expressions, the attending experts continuously fueled the enthusiasm for discussions at the venue, propelling the academic exchanges to successive climaxes.

At the closing ceremony of the forum, Shengli Ren, Academic Director of Science China Press, spoke highly of the academic value of this forum. He pointed out that high-caliber academic journals and high-quality academic conferences enjoy a mutually reinforcing synergistic effect, and the successful convening of this forum has built an important platform for advancing interdisciplinary integration and academic cooperation. Mr. Ren emphasized the need to continuously promote the high-quality development of China’s domestic scientific and technological journals and enhance the international influence of Chinese academic journals. Professor Chung-I Wu, Associate Editor-in-Chief of National Science Review, delivered a summary of the forum. He highly commended the wonderful presentations and lively discussions by all participating experts, noting that the forum had achieved the expected outcomes, with experts from different fields engaging in ideological collisions. He expressed the expectation that the forum would inspire more outstanding scientific research in information and life sciences in the future. Finally, he announced the successful conclusion of the 2025 Frontier Forum on Information and Life Sciences of National Science Review.
